Virtual Read Alouds
Virtual Read-Alouds | Miss Stubbs' Learning Corner

Reading aloud to students is an important way to model fluency and love of reading, as well as practice critical comprehension skills. I continue this practice remotely with my first grade class by filming read-alouds accompanied by comprehension activities or writing prompts. I post them in a playlist on my Youtube channel dedicated to online learning, Miss Stubbs' Learning Corner. In this example, I read a The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson, a picture book about celebrating diversity.

At the early elementary level, it is especially important to deliver hands-on instruction to help students connect to science curriculum. I carried hands-on instruction into the remote-learning environment by filming hands-on demonstrations of science concepts and posting them in a playlist on my Miss Stubbs' Learning Corner YouTube Channel. This demonstration links to Next Generation Science Standard PS-4: "Sound can make matter vibrate, and vibrating matter can make sound." I have also attached the handout that goes with the video.

Staying connected with students and their learning entails not only continued delivery of instruction, but also continued assessment of learning goals. The interactive nature of Nearpod lessons not only allows students to engage with the content of the lesson, but also allows the teacher to collect information on student responses. As the teacher, I have access to all data from embedded quizzes and open-ended questions in these lessons, so that I am able to review student progress and respond with instructional adjustments, such as providing additional materials. The example lesson to the left introduces a larger unit on sound and vibrations, which includes the Groovy Vibrations video.
