Lesson 01 | Reading Component Lesson Plan: Vocabulary Comprehension

I taught vocabulary as a component of literacy development to my third-year Reading Instruction and Assessment class at Washington College. I began by administering a Vocabulary Knowledge Scale to assess the students' existing knowledge of the words from the chapter. The lesson consisted largely of a PowerPoint presentation and lecture, which incorporated breaks for paired discussion of more challenging concepts. I concluded the lesson by asking the students to review the Vocabulary Knowledge Scale and reflect on their understanding post-instruction.

Lesson 02 | "Graphing Is Sweet!": First Grade Math

In the first grade class in which I participated in my senior internship, I implemented this fun, hands-on math lesson plan that incorporated student interests as well as a little bit of candy! In this lesson, I warmed up students' brains by discussing graphs using recognizable icons representing media they enjoy (Minecraft, Paw Patrol, The Avengers). Then, as a class, we collected data on everyone's favorite candy, and then each student used actual pieces of candy to make their graph!

Lesson 03 | "Asking and Answering Questions about First Grade Texts": First Grade Reading

To encourage students to think about asking questions as we read aloud, I added student Question Cards to this lesson. Each student's question card had a question mark on the front and their question words (Who, What, When, Where, How and Why) marked on the back. On the classroom easel, I made a chart labeled "Before." "During," and "After," on which student volunteers posted questions they had before, during, and after reading that morning's text, How Bat Got Its Wings.
